AGLC4 Rule 7.5.2: Written Submissions to Government and Parliamentary Inquiries, Committees and Agencies

A written submission is cited by its author, the words Submission No and its number, the word to and the receiving body, the italic name of the inquiry, the date in brackets and any pinpoint. A parliamentary committee is named with its legislature; an anonymous or suppressed author is omitted unless otherwise identified; the number is dropped where submissions are unnumbered; the inquiry name is dropped where it is not stated and always for royal commissions.

Author, Submission No Number to Body, Name of Inquiry (Full Date) Pinpoint.
Committee, Legislature

A boxed element is filled in with the source's details; everything outside a box is written exactly as shown.

Formatting

  • The author is roman and followed by a comma; a code name used in place of a suppressed name is used as the author.
  • The words Submission No, the number and the word to are roman; No takes no full stop.
  • Where submissions are unnumbered the phrase is simply Submission to.
  • The receiving body is roman; for a parliamentary committee it is the committee name, a comma, and the legislature, with the chamber added in front where needed.
  • A comma follows the body, then the inquiry name in italics.
  • The inquiry name is omitted where it is not stated, and always for a submission to a royal commission, whose name serves as the body.
  • The date follows in round brackets after a space, given as fully as known; if there is no date the pinpoint follows the inquiry name directly.
  • The pinpoint follows after a space and may combine a page and a paragraph in square brackets.
  • Submissions by parties to litigation are cited under rule 2.8 instead.
