AGLC4 Rule 7.15: Internet Materials

Material that exists only online and is not covered by another rule is cited by author (only where the page names one and it differs from the website), the document title in quotation marks, the italic website title, a bracket with the document type and date, any pinpoint, and the URL. Use Web Page where the type is unclear, the last update date where available, and omit the date where none is shown. Social media profile pages are cited under this rule.

Format

Quoted from the Guide, page 130
Author, ‘Document Title’, Web Page Title (Document Type, Full Date) Pinpoint <URL>.

A boxed element is filled in with the source's details; everything outside a box is written exactly as shown.

Formatting

  • The author is roman and followed by a comma, and is omitted where none is named or it is the same as the website.
  • The document title is roman in single curly quotation marks, capitalised as for journal articles under rule 5.2, followed by a comma.
  • The website title is italic and capitalised as for books under rule 6.2.
  • The bracket follows after a space with the document type (for example Web Page, Blog Post, Forum Post), then a comma and the date.
  • When there is no date, the bracket contains only the document type.
  • A pinpoint, where available, is usually a paragraph in square brackets after a space.
  • The URL always follows after a space in angle brackets with no spaces inside, and an archived link may follow after a comma and the words archived at.
  • A case name mentioned in a document title stays roman inside the quotation marks.
  • The citation ends with a full stop.
