AGLC4 Rule 25.1: United States of America: Cases

A reported United States case is cited by its party names, the report volume, the report series, the starting page and any pinpoint, then a round bracket holding whatever jurisdiction and court information is needed and the year. The subrules deal with each element in turn.

AGLC4 page 264

Formatting

  • The case name is italic and is followed by a comma that is roman.
  • Volume, report series abbreviation and starting page are separated by single spaces with no punctuation between them.
  • A pinpoint follows the starting page after a comma and a space.
  • The citation closes with round brackets holding the jurisdiction and court (where needed), a comma and a space, then the year; the year is never in square brackets because United States series are organised by volume.
  • Where no jurisdiction or court is needed the round brackets hold the year alone.
