AGLC4 Rule 1.6.1: Full Stops

Full stops only end sentences and footnotes. They are left out of abbreviations, initials and heading numbers or letters, but document numbers keep the full stops shown on the source. Full stops in abbreviations or initials inside a quotation or a citation element are removed silently.

Formatting

  • No full stops in abbreviations such as Cth, NSW, eg, ie, cf or et al.
  • Initials take no full stops and no spaces between them: DH Lawrence.
  • No full stop after heading numbers or letters.
  • Document numbers keep their full stops exactly as printed on the source.
  • Full stops removed from a quoted passage or a title or publisher are not flagged with an ellipsis, brackets, [sic] or anything else.
