AGLC4 Rule 1.6.2: Commas

Commas separate items in a list of three or more, with a comma before the final item only where needed to avoid ambiguity. A subordinate clause has commas on both sides or on neither.

Formatting

  • No automatic comma before the final "and" of a list; add one only to prevent ambiguity.
  • Never place a comma on only one side of a subordinate clause.
  • Lists of authors or judges in citations follow the same style: commas between names and no comma before "and".
