AGLC4 Rule 7.3: Speeches

A speech is cited by the speaker, its title in quotation marks, and a bracket with the word Speech, the forum and the date. A named lecture uses its name in place of Speech, without a leading The and without any series number, and the city is given only where no forum is named.

Format

Author, ‘Title’ (Speech, Institution/Forum, Full Date) Pinpoint.

A boxed element is filled in with the source's details; everything outside a box is written exactly as shown.

Formatting

  • The speaker is roman, keeping any judicial or noble title the speaker used, such as Justice, Chief Justice or Lord, followed by a comma.
  • The title is roman in single curly quotation marks; terminal question marks stay inside the quotation marks.
  • The bracket begins with the word Speech, or with the lecture name when the speech is a named lecture.
  • A lecture name drops a leading The and any ordinal number in the series.
  • After a comma comes the institution or forum; when none is identified, the city or town of delivery is given instead, and when one is identified no city is added.
  • A comma then precedes the full date, and the bracket closes.
  • A pinpoint and then a URL in angle brackets may follow the bracket.
  • A speech later published in a journal or book is cited under chapters 5 and 6.
