AGLC4 Rule 5.10: Articles Published in Online Journals

Articles in journals published only online are cited like printed articles as far as possible, although volume, issue or starting page may not exist. An article number or other identifier replaces the starting page, and pinpoints follow it after a comma. Where the article is a PDF or similar, the identifier is followed by a colon and the page range of the whole article, then the pinpoint.

Article Number/Identifier:Page Range of Article, Pinpoint.

A boxed element is filled in with the source's details; everything outside a box is written exactly as shown.

Formatting

  • Elements that the online journal does not have, such as a volume, issue or starting page, are simply omitted.
  • The article number or identifier takes the starting page's place and is reproduced as the source shows it.
  • A pinpoint follows the identifier after a comma and a space, using whatever form suits the article, such as paragraphs or parts.
  • For a PDF or similar, the identifier is followed immediately by a colon and the article's page range, with no space on either side of the colon.
  • The page range covers every page of the PDF version and is joined with an en dash.
  • The pinpoint after the comma is a position within that range and may include a paragraph pinpoint in square brackets.
