AGLC4 Rule 3.9.4: Court Practice Directions and Practice Notes

A practice direction or practice note reproduced in a report series is cited by court, then the italic designation, identifier and title, then the report citation and a pinpoint. One not in a report series takes a full date instead of the report citation. A numeric identifier is preceded by No, and the report series version is preferred whenever it exists.

Format

Quoted from the Guide, page 81
Court, Practice Direction/Note Number/Identifier: Title of Practice Direction/Note Citation to Report Series, Pinpoint.
Court, Practice Direction/Note Number/Identifier: Title of Practice Direction/Note, Full Date, Pinpoint.

A boxed element is filled in with the source's details; everything outside a box is written exactly as shown.

Formatting

  • The court comes first, roman, followed by a comma.
  • The words Practice Direction or Practice Note, the identifier, the colon and the title are all italic.
  • Where the identifier is clearly a number, No and a space come before it; an identifier that is not a number takes no No.
  • A colon with no space before it and one space after it separates the identifier from the title.
  • Where there is no identifier, the designation leads straight into the colon and title.
  • For a reported document, the report citation follows the title after a space with no comma, formatted under rule 2.2.2 and including the starting page.
  • For an unreported document, a comma follows the title, then the full date written day, month in full, year.
  • The pinpoint comes last, after a comma, and is to pages or pages and paragraphs under rules 1.1.6 and 1.1.7.
  • The version in the court's authorised report series is cited in preference to any other.
