AGLC4 Rule 13.2.1: Official GATT Documents

Official GATT documents are cited like official WTO documents under rule 13.1.2, with the GATT document number where there is one. A description is given only where the document shows one, and a full date inside the description is removed. A reference to Basic Instruments and Selected Documents (GATT BISD) follows the date where the document is reproduced there. Pinpoints are to paragraphs, or to pages where there are no paragraph numbers.

GATT BISD Volume No/Starting Page
GATT BISD Supplement NoS/Starting Page

A boxed element is filled in with the source's details; everything outside a box is written exactly as shown.

Formatting

  • Order: italic title, comma, GATT Doc and the number, space, full date in round brackets, space, description in round brackets, then any GATT BISD citation, then the pinpoint.
  • GATT Doc is roman with no full stop.
  • Where the document has no number, the number and the comma after the title are both omitted, so the title is followed directly by the date brackets.
  • Where the description would repeat the full date, the date is dropped from the description.
  • A GATT BISD citation follows the date (or the description) after a space: for the original volumes, GATT BISD, a Roman numeral volume, an unspaced slash and the starting page; for supplements, GATT BISD, the supplement number immediately followed by S, an unspaced slash and the starting page.
  • There is no punctuation between the date and the pinpoint, except that a comma comes before the pinpoint where a GATT BISD citation is included.
  • Pinpoints follow rule 13.1.2, but are bare page numbers where the document has no paragraph numbers, with an en dash for a range.
